Painting from Southern California, en plein air.... That's just going outside and painting on location. I have friends in La Jolla, California, so I like to just get away from the snow and head to the beach to paint the beautiful coast in the winter. I've learned so much about how waves and water interact with light and color, and how that interaction causes the painting to feel alive. The other thing is to be close to the water, but avoid getting hit by the obscure large wave, since pastels don't like to get wet. I hope to do larger studio pieces one day. Well, I must have gotten something right: Ramon Kelley, a great Prix de West artist and pastel artist, awarded me Best of Show for one of my plein air seascapes.
