I love all seasons, but crisp white snow with the warm afternoon sun is my favorite. The sun brings out the warm colors in the pines, aspens, and willows, while creating contrast of purples and blues within the shadows. One painting rule is: Warm Light causes Cool Shadows, Cool Light causes Warm Shadows. This is easy to see in the snow and the trees. Hiking in the winter or snowshoeing gives me some wonderful experiences to observe nature at this time of year. And if you're lucky, you might see a red tail fox traveling along a river or mule deer making their way through aspens near sunset.
